Space Institute for Students

Witold Kinsner, PhD, PEng

Summary: Since our beginning, people have been solving problems with an amazing perseverance and tenacity. We have an inherent desire to explore. Through exploration, we expand our knowledge and understanding, technology, create new industries, and help to foster a peaceful coexistence. Our planet requires solutions that are very challenging, interdependent and multidisciplinary.

Space provides a good platform for such exploration because its solutions are often multidisciplinary, involving science, engineering, technology, medicine, business, and law. Space science and engineering have changed our country since the launch of the Canadian Alouette-1 in 1962. We now have space instrumentation manufacturers, satellite manufacturers and operators, and the growing value-added sector for Space Big Data.

Can high-school students get involved in such exploration? Yes, they can. This talk will summarize our experience with a Space Camp and a Space Institue for Students. The experience with our nano-satellite developed at the University of Manitoba also shows what multidisciplinary students can accomplish.

CSS Winnipeg Gets Creative with Workshops!

Winnipeg - As most of us know, it often can be much easier to teach or learn something when it is fun - remember all those Barney songs (might have dated myself a bit there!)? Of course, it is also true for space stuff, although one might also argue that space is pretty much interesting/cool/sick no matter how you look at it.  The CSS Winnipeg group was pleased and excited to partner with the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada (formerly the Western Canada Aviation Museum) to provide some on-site workshops across various fields of interest.
