The CSS is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Ms Leslie Swartman to its Board of Directors effective immediately.  Leslie's primary role with the Board will be to function as its External Relations Director.  Some biographical information on Leslie, who currently works for MDA as its Director for Public Affairs:

Leslie is a communications professional with a 20+ year track record in the field, having worked in the highest levels of government and politics and in the private sector for a research and communications firm and a publicly-traded company.

She has broad communications skills that span strategic planning, media relations, reputation management, stakeholder engagement, media training, crisis management, social media, research, advertising, graphic design, writing and event planning. These skills were honed by working as a Press Officer to the Prime Minister of Canada, as Director of Communications to the International Trade Minister, as Chief of Staff to the federal ministers of Transport and Agriculture, as a communications consultant and most recently as Director of Public Affairs for Canada’s largest space company, MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates.

In her current position, she leads MDA’s communications outreach efforts towards its largest Canadian customer, the federal government. Her efforts involve using earned media, advertising, sponsorships, high level departmental briefings on corporate direction, advocacy, third party stakeholder outreach and thought leadership to increase awareness of MDA and to improve its reputation. She also tracks ongoing policy files and emerging issues and provides advice to senior company executives. Her unique skills in the company mean that she is often called upon to write briefing notes, speeches and reports. In 2012, she participated in the Space industry working group set up to provide advice on space policy to the federal Aerospace Review panel and she co-authored of the final Space Working Group report.

Leslie is married and has a four-year-old son.

The CSS is thrilled to have Leslie as part of our team and we look forward to working with her over the coming year.
