Standing Session Chair, Space Life Sciences: Dr Shawna Pandya
The CSS is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Shawna Pandya as the Standing Session Chair, Space Life Sciences.
Dr. Shawna Pandya was part of the first crew to test a commercial spacesuit in microgravity, and also completed scientist-astronaut training with Project PoSSUM. In 2015, she was chair and curator of the first-ever International Space Development Conference LaunchPad session, and will be reprising this role for ISDC 2016.
She haspreviously conducted space medical research at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and the European Space Agency’s European Astronaut Center, as well as authored a book chapter on space spin-off technologiesbenefitingterrestrialmedicine. As part of her work at NASA, Dr. Pandya delineated medical scenarios and optimized the Medical Kit contents fora Near-Earth Asteroid Mission, which was praised by NASA Astronaut Kjell Lindgren as “outstanding” and “invaluable towards the body of work for long-duration spaceflight.”
She currently serves on the SEDS-Canada Board of Advisors, International Lunar Observer Association Board of Directors, Dr. KC Chawla Scholarship Board ofDirectors,isamemberofAstronauts4Hireandservesasamentorwith CyberMentor, a program that seeks to encourage grade-school girls to explore STEM careers.
In everyday life, Dr. Pandya is a physician, entrepreneur, podcaster, motivational speaker and university lectureron technology and innovation. Dr. Pandya’s personal interests include Taekwon-do, Muay Thai kickboxing, piano and working towards her private pilot’s license.
